Commenti

  1. Welcome back!

Great lists I have to say. We like many of the same movies and performances, though of course, there are some distinctions I'd like to point out.

I love seeing Hugh Jackman in the top 5, though obviously Chalamet wouldn't be my winner, and that goes double for Hammer and Stuhlbarg. All very good performances, don't get me wrong, but I'm not head over heels for them. The Three Billboards trio has still stuck with me, with Harrelson and Rockwell both making my ballot, thus replacing Stan who is by my judgement a leading performance any ways. Its nice to have Phantom Thread in the top spots, however, though again Day-Lewis is my unabashed favourite best actor nominee.

Just out of curiosity, Giuseppe, have you checked out "All the Money in the World" and/or "Roman J Israel Esq"?

    1. Thank you! Unfortunately I've been quite busy lately, as I've started university and I started writing for an Italian site. Still, I'll try to post as often as I can (for example posting my personal Oscar winners) and I'll be reading your articles, of course.

For me, the three actors from Call Me By Your Name are all mesmerizing and the film itself is a masterpiece. As for Three Billboards, eh... My opinion pretty much stands. I really like McDormand and Harrelson but they wouldn't make my own cut. Rockwell for me is a weak winner, though a decent performance. Regarding Stan, he feels supporting to me but it's a very borderline case and I strongly considered putting him in lead. Day-Lewis is amazing in Phantom Thread, but I have to admit the women in that film left a stronger impression on me.

I have not seen All the Money in the World and Roman J. Israel Esq. I probably will one day, but I just can't find the interest in them right now. They both look kind of average to me :(

  2. Welcome back! First of all you wrote a great review about Sulla Mia Pelle! I’m glad to see you really liked both Phantom Thread and Blade Runner 2049.

Your ratings and thoughts on Trinca and Borghi in Fortunata?

    1. I'm glad you liked my review! I write quite often for Awards Today. If you follow me on Twitter (@giuppi00) you can see all the articles I write.

Trinca - 5 (I have to admit I wasn't too fond of the film as I thought its narrative was a bit of a mess and some characters, such as Edoardo Pesce's and especially Stefano Accorsi's, were extremely thin. Trinca though is absolutely marvelous in the leading role, finding both the coarseness and the good intentions of Fortunata. She's enjoyably vulgar without ever becoming a shrill caricature. And she's extremely poignant at portraying her character's plight as life constantly seems to let her down. She handles her emotional moments impeccably but what's especially amazing is the way she conveys Fortunata's iron will and quiet resilience in spite of the tragedies that befall her. She portrays Fortunata's emotional growth impeccably, making her arc both cathartic and uplifting)

Borghi - 4.5 (He's excellent too and his chemistry with Trinca is the heart of the movie. Borghi makes Chicano an incredibly endearing character and brings a nice bit of energy whenever he appears. His scenes with Trinca are lovely as the two actors convey so well the deep friendship between the characters. Past that, he is truly heartbreaking at portraying Chicano's troubled state as he fights his addiction, his mental illness and his mother's failing health. His final scenes are particularly devastating)

  3. Also, Giuseppe, what would be your thoughts on the following performances? There in films I believe you've discussed before, but do correct me if I'm wrong.

    Tom Cruise (Magnolia)
    Brad Pitt/Edward Norton (Fight Club)
Jude Law/Matt Damon (The Talented Mr. Ripley)
    Dennis Quaid (Far from Heaven)
    John Hawkes (Winter's Bone)
    Ewan McGregor (The Impossible)
Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave)
    Ethan Hawke (Boyhood)

    1. Sorry I took so long to answer. I should note that I haven't seen some of these movies in quite a while.

Cruise - 5 (I think it's his best performance and one I honestly can't wait to revisit. Cruise is magnificent at portraying this sort of self-absorbed, obnoxious guru, portraying the role with the right sort of smugness but also confidence and charisma. As the movie progresses, he's rather powerful at portraying the vulnerability behind his façade, beautifully building up to his final scene with Robards in which Cruise is absolutely devastating as he conveys so powerfully Frank's pain and resentment)

Pitt/Norton (I should rewatch the movie to actually settle on a rating on both of them, though I'm definitely positive on both performances. Pitt has rarely been more charismatic and Norton makes for an excellent straight man of sorts until the twist that so beautifully subverts both performances. It's great work from both of them, both separately but especially together as they pay off each other in such a perfect, complementary manner)

Damon - 4 (Along with The Martian, this is probably my favorite performance from him. It's actually a pretty powerful performance as he starts off as this awkward but somewhat endearing leading man and then, as the story progresses, translates to a far darker portrayal as he delves into his character's insanity. It's a disturbing performance that might actually benefit from a rewatch)

Law - 4.5 (This is a terrific performance from him as he portrays so well his character's vapidness and selfishness but also makes you understand completely why people would be so captivated by him. He brings an incredible amount of charm to the role and makes for a truly alluring presence that makes us invested in him even though it's clear he's pretty much a terrible person. It's a two-dimensional role really, but a believable one and also one that is incredibly hard to play and Law succeeds flawlessly. I have to say Paltrow's is my favorite performance from the film)

Quaid - 4 (Another film I should rewatch. I remember Quaid being rather effective at slowly subverting the trope of the "perfect 1950s father" to reveal his character's plight and struggle to adapt to that trope. It's a layered performance that manages to be moving not because it begs for sympathy but because it's pretty brutal in its realism towards the end. I remember him being perhaps a little overshadowed by Moore though)

    2. Hawkes - 4.5 (I haven't seen the film in ages, but I remember him being terrific in his small amount of screen-time and having a pitch-perfect chemistry with Lawrence. It's honestly a film I can't wait to revisit as I remember liking it very much)

McGregor - 4.5 (I found this to be a truly devastating performance. It's not a particularly deep character but McGregor trascends its limitations making the viewer invested in every single step of his journey. He brings the needed strength and determination to his character while nailing every single emotional beat. It's just a very moving performance and I actually think he gave the best performance of the movie)

Fassbender - 5 (Amazing work from him as the role could have been a mere stereotype. Fassbender makes Epps a truly despicable character in every way and he's incredibly disturbing in his portrayal of his abuse towards his slaves, especially Patsy. There's just a visceral quality to his work that makes it wildly unpredictable and terrifying. But what makes his performance even more powerful is the fact that he never makes Epps a one-dimensional villain: he shows a certain complexity in his feelings towards Patsy, a genuine attraction that he can't cope with due to his hateful, racist mindset. The self-disgust that ends up translating into violence towards Patsy is exactly what makes his work so terrifying and bone-chilling)

Hawke - 4.5 (A truly wonderful performance that is fully believable every single step of the way. It's a performance that feels genuinely true to life and he portrays marvelously his character's development over the years. In a movie that strives for realism and authenticity, his performance is truly the perfect fit)

  5. Any thoughts on the oscar nominations, Giuseppe? Not sure how many of the films/performances you've seen, but what would be your initial response to the general fields, acting or otherwise?

    1. Sorry for the late response, I've been very busy lately.

Anyway, I was not particularly enthusiastic about the Oscar nominations as a whole. Not so much because I disliked the actual nominations, but rather because many of the films and performances I loved this year got horribly snubbed. Also, there are way too many category frauds.

Bohemian Rhapsody's 5 nominations are particularly puzzling to me (especially the editing one). I liked Malek, but I found the film to be a shallow biopic with very thin writing and a questionable approach to Mercury's sexuality.

Still, there a few very inspired nods. Aparicio's and de Tavira's nods were a pleasant surprise. I'm glad Dafoe's performance, one of my favorite of the year, got recognized. Pawlikowski's nomination for Director was genius. And I'm glad that Roma and The Favourite, my favorite movies of the year, got 10 nominations each.
