Commenti

  1. Not bad, Giuseppe. Although our favourite movies and performances from this particular year don't align completely (Ex, Emma Stone being my favourite of 2016's best actress line up, and my strong support of "Hacksaw Ridge"), we do share the same passion for a number of them IE Nicole Kidman for "Lion", Viggo Mortensen for "Captain Fantastic" and so on.

    Speaking of which, what would be your ratings and thoughts for the following performances;

    Viggo Mortensen (Green Book)
    Glenn Close (The Wife)
Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born)
Kenneth Branagh (My Week with Marilyn)
    Emma Stone (Birdman)
    Charlize Theron (North Country)
    Jim Broadbent (Iris)
    Sissy Spacek (In the Bedroom)
    Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby)
Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are Alright)

    1. Mortensen - 4.5 (I think Green Book is a mediocre movie and a terrible Best Picture winner, but I actually liked the acting from the two leads, especially from Mortensen. It's a performance that is over-the-top without a doubt, but personally I thought he never became a full-blown caricature and actually bothered to give his character a certain depth. I think Mortensen makes Tony's growth not only believable but also heartwarming and his chemistry with Ali is top notch. I have many problems with the film, but he is not one of them)

Close - 3.5 (I actually think she's great for the most part at conveying her character's inner turmoil behind her steely, reserved composure. She carries the otherwise not especially remarkable film very well and has a few genuinely great moments, namely her meeting with Slater's character and her reactions during the ceremony. Where her performance falls short for me is in her final confrontation with Pryce, which I felt ended up being a little overcooked and not quite as powerful as I hoped. She builds up perfectly to that moment but then she kind of disappoints)

Gaga - 4.5 (She's actually quite close to a 5 for me, but she does have a few moments in which her inexperience shines through. In particular, I think she's a bit underwhelming in her scene with Cooper at the rehab center, as I think she sort of leaves all of the heavy lifting with him. But those are merely minor nitpicks. Gaga gets rid of her usual, beautifully flamboyant persona to disappear into the character of Ally. It's an endearing, naturalistic turn for the most part and I think her chemistry with Cooper is absolutely incendiary. I think the film should have focused more on her journey as an artist, which I think is handled in a way that is a little problematic, but I found Gaga to be rather moving in her portrayal of Ally's attempts to find her own voice and style - and that's exactly why the ending is so powerful. As for her singing scenes, she is groundbreaking in all of them, especially Shallow and I'll Never Love Again)

Branagh - 4 (Haven't seen the film in like six years, but I remember him being by far the best part of it. His performances goes beyond the impersonation, which is rather good anyway, and manages to be a remarkable portrayal of a great artist and his insecurities)

Stone - 4.5 (A film I haven't seen since it was released, but I remember Stone's performance to be very effective. She is rather good at portraying Sam's abrasive behavior while subtly hinting at her vulnerability underneath. She mainly has to work opposite Keaton and Norton and she shares an excellent chemistry with both. With Keaton, she conveys so well the conflicted feelings against her father. She nails her big outbursts which she fills with the right exhasperation and a hint of venom, but she's especially effective at portraying the regret in her eyes right after. Her scenes with Norton are playful and endearing and the two actors nicely show the connection between these two troubled characters. Also, her final reaction is perfection)

Theron - 4.5 (The film is not very good, but Theron is fantastic in it. She single-handedly carries the whole film on her shoulders, realistically and powerfully portraying her character's weariness due to the constant abuse and mistreatment she receives. When she finally decides to stand up for herself, Theron makes Josie's journey genuinely uplifting and moving. A beautiful performance in a film that doesn't deserve it)

    2. Broadbent - 3.5 (I remember finding the movie dreadfully dull, but Broadbent gives a pretty nice and supportive performance. I don't remember much about it to be honest, and I think he should have been nominated for Moulin Rouge! instead, but this is still a pretty lovely performance and certainly one of the best elements of the film)

Spacek - 5 (Fantastic performance as she captures so well her character's devastation. It's an incredibly original and intelligent portrayal of grief and trauma and I love how Spacek is never afraid of making Ruth an unpleasant character: she is a woman in pain, whose son has been murdered, she does not have to be likeable. She builds up perfectly to her big confrontation with Wilkinson and I found her final scene to be quite chilling)

I haven't seen Million Dollar Baby and The Kids are All Right in ages (and I didn't like either of them back then). I remember Swank being good, though it's not a performance that stayed with me. I should give it another watch. As for Ruffalo, I remember him being quite good in the role but again it's a performance I should revisit.
